Bio-environment, typically referring to the environment as it relates to living organisms, encompasses the vivid interactions between living organisms such as plants, animals, humans, and microorganisms, and their physical surroundings, including air, water, soil, and climate. Bio-environment solely emphasizes the biological aspects of environmental studies and how organisms adapt to and affect their habitats.
There was a time when people believed nature was the most powerful force; them holding nature in the highest regard, attributing human’s very existence to nature’s power and influence. Nature is, and will always be responsible for creating and sustaining all forms of life. Decades later, this ain’t the same story now.
Today, as a new era of technological advancements and intellectual achievements is dawning across the globe, the world is also facing grave consequences from the exploitation of natural resources. Despite entering a new epoch of technological sophistication, we often overlook the looming iceberg of doom, such as the silent disappearance of biodiversity contributing to the plaguing damage to the ecosystem.
The most pressing concerns are deforestation, the extinction of species, and the slow, insidious degradation of soil, air and water quality with pesticides, petroleum hydrocarbons, herbicides, chemical byproducts, and heavy metal compounds spreading their poison on our fragile planet too.
Governments and local bodies have undertaken a myriad of initiatives and projects to reduce pollution and shield the environment from the relentless assault of industrial, agricultural, and household waste. Yet, despite these measures, the results shimmer only partially in the light. Conventional remediation processes at contaminated sites, such as excavation and removal, pump treatment, soil vapor extraction, and other chemical treatments, are often costly, less effective, time-consuming, and disruptive to the environment. The quest for a harmonious balance with our environment continues with great efforts seeking resonance that remains elusive, but still attainable.
The environmental challenges are exacerbated by a general lack of public awareness and responsibility regarding the sustainable management of natural resources. Human activities are pushing the boundaries of natural systems, leading to a plethora of environmental issues. Biodiversity conservation has long been a challenge, as companies often failed to see the immediate economic benefits of preservation. However, as conservation becomes the urgent need of the hour, our focus shifts to the emerging field of bioenvironmental studies. This discipline aims to create a sustainable global environment for humans and countless other living beings.
Industries and other entities are now leveraging cutting-edge research to generate valuable insights to share with local communities and ensure that research advances in harmony, fostering a future where economic, social, and ecological interests align.
When it comes to studying nature, where else could be more ideal than the incredible northeast region of India. Researchers can gain firsthand insights into the intricate workings of life, making the Northeast an invaluable resource for bioenvironmental studies. Engaging with this region’s vibrant ecosystems is precisely what our planet needs for a sustainable future. Collaboration at the community level, ensuring sustainability, is an important aspect of developing groundbreaking ideas.
The entrepreneurial scope in the bio-environmental research discipline is vast and promising. As global awareness of environmental issues grows, there is an increasing demand for innovative solutions to address challenges such as climate change, pollution, and biodiversity loss. Entrepreneurs are capitalizing on the development of sustainable technologies, such as bioremediation methods, renewable energy sources, and eco-friendly agricultural practices. Additionally, bioenvironmental research can lead to the creation of new products and services, including natural resource management tools, environmental impact assessment services, and green consulting firms. By bridging the gap between cutting-edge scientific research and practical, marketable solutions, we can not only contribute to environmental sustainability but also build profitable ventures that drive positive change – the need of the hour.
NEISED is a non-profit forum dedicated to advancing life sciences research and promotion among the Northeast Indian diaspora by connecting scientists, industry experts, scholars, and students.
